Frequently asked questions

I’m having export issues. I can’t export, or I get an error when exporting. Help?

Most exporting issues can be resolved with a simple update of iMovie and a restart of your computer. For additional issues, I suggest watching this tutorial: Solve Exporting Issues.

How can I export a project and its events from iMovie on my MacBook so I can import them into my iMac? (I’m running iMovie 10.0.7.)

The iMovie versions on your MacBook and iMac must be the same. Plug in your external drive (USB, SD or external hard drive), then follow this tutorial: Transfer To External Drive. Then use the same method to import into iMovie on your iMac, which I also have a tutorial on.

How do I export in iMovie?

In a project, go to the top right > Share/Export > File. I have a highly favored tutorial here: How To Export.

How do I do the picture-in-picture effect in iMovie?

Open the edit features > Crop > Picture in Picture. I have a very good tutorial on this here: Picture in Picture.

Thanks for the tips. What about when YouTube says you may have audio/video sync issues when you export this way?

There really should be no issue. Upload to YouTube, play your video and double-check for any audio issues. I’ve used this method for the past year and haven’t had any problems. Hope this helps.

We’re experiencing high-resolution photos turning green in 10.0.8. What can I do?

Did you import these photos from a camera or some other external device? Make sure the photos are on your desktop and import them into iMovie again. In addition, rename the photos to something else and try again. If all else fails, convert the images to .png and try again; you can do this by changing the file name from “example.jpeg” to “example.png.”

How do I free up space on my hard drive through iMovie? I want to delete old clips I no longer need.

You’ll find most of your old clips in the “Rejected” section of iMovie. Here is a tutorial on this: Delete Old Videos.

Is there a way to merge a separately imported audio file into a video clip? Editing both separately is a headache.

Yes. Create a separate project, place your footage and align the audio below it. Export the file, and you’ll have one video with the audio and footage combined. Import that into iMovie again and continue editing.

How do I split audio files? I want to break my main song into two segments.

With the audio clip selected in iMovie, place your cursor where you’d like to make the split and press Command + B to cut and split the audio clip. Here is also a tutorial on this: Split Audio Segments.

I can’t find my content library. It’s not appearing or it’s greyed out. What can I do?

You need to create an event first, then a project, before your content library shows up. Here is a tutorial: Content Library Issues.

My new iPhone doesn’t show up as a drive to import from.

Make sure you’ve synced your iPhone with iTunes, then try again.
