iTunes 12
Archived (2015–2016). This guide was written for iTunes 12. The app has changed since, so menus and features may differ in newer versions.
Brief description
iTunes is the best way to organize and enjoy the music, movies, and TV shows you already have and shop for the ones you want to get. You can even listen to free streaming radio stations with iTunes Radio. iTunes works on Mac, PC, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, and Apple TV. — Apple
Frequently asked questions
My iTunes won’t load, start or open. What can I do?
Make sure iTunes is fully up to date through the App Store, then restart your computer, closing all applications first.
Some artist pictures don’t appear in my iTunes Artists section. Is something wrong?
That artist may not have a photo set, or your iTunes may not be fully updated, synced or signed in to an account, or you may not have an internet connection. Check all of these, then restart your computer, closing all applications before the restart.
How do I remove existing album art?
It’s the same way you’d “Get Album Artwork.” Go to the album, right-click it, choose “Clear Album Artwork,” refresh, and the artwork will be removed.
When I plug in my iPad it asks “Trust this computer?” and I press Trust, but I don’t see my iPad in iTunes. Help?
There should be the same pop-up on both your computer and your iPad. Once approved on both, your device should appear in iTunes. Try restarting your iPad while it’s plugged into the computer (turn it off, then on).
My playlist option is greyed out, so I can’t click it.
When you’re in your playlist tab, look for the plus (+) sign in the bottom-left corner of iTunes. Select it and you should get an option to create a playlist.
Where is the “repeat” button in iTunes 12?
I personally haven’t found this option, other than constantly adding the same song to “Up Next” or “Play Next.”
Can I still delete a song from the computer in iTunes? It used to give me the option when removing it from a playlist.
Yes, you can still delete any song. Go to your main library (not a playlist), right-click and choose “Remove this song” or “Delete.” A prompt will tell you the song will be removed from all other playlists, and it will then be moved to your trash.
Can I set up my library on a new computer? It says I must erase everything to sync my iPod/iPhone.
Make sure you’re signed in to iTunes with the same account. If you bought a new laptop and didn’t transfer your data from the old one, you’ll have to re-sync your iPhone or iPod and start fresh. Anything you purchased (songs, apps, movies) should still be in your iTunes account history under “Purchased.”
It deleted all my songs off my phone and won’t let me sync them back, because the phone icon doesn’t show up when I connect my iPhone.
Make sure you’re running the latest version of iTunes, restart your iPhone and your Mac, then reconnect and try again. Let me know if this solves the issue.
How do I make a playlist?
In iTunes, go to the top of your screen and choose File > New > New Playlist.
How can I apply album artwork that isn’t from iTunes?
Find the image online, copy it, then go to iTunes > Album > right-click > Get Info > Artwork tab, and paste the copied artwork there.
